  DBP Supports First Cancer Institute in Western Visayas

DBP recently approved a P259-million term loan to Medicus Cancer Institute Inc. to address the unserved demand and provide better cancer treatment options in Western Visayas.

President and Chief Executive Officer Cecilia C. Borromeo said the loan facility reflects the Bank’s renewed commitment to bolster its support for social services, particularly in enhancing health care services in the provinces.

“DBP remains committed to expanding financial support to health care institutions such as Medicus Cancer Institute through our loan programs to improve access to quality and affordable health care services to all Filipinos,” President Borromeo said.

Medicus Cancer Institute Inc., located in San Rafael, Mandurriao, Iloilo City, is the pioneer in the region to operate the first advanced radiation treatment facility using the Varian Clinac CX Accelerator which is considered as an effective and reliable cancer treatment option. At present, the facility is only available in Manila, South Luzon, Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

Based on the 2010 Philippine Health Statistics by the Department of Health, cancer is the third leading cause of death among Filipinos. In Western Visayas, there were 241 cancer cases recorded per 100,000 residents or 0.24% of the population. With the rising population in the province, the existing cancer facilities cannot cope with both the present and potential demand. Presently, cancer patients from Western Visayas have to seek treatment in Cebu and Manila which further makes the treatment costly.
